The Growth in Google Results for RFID Security Keywords

Contributed by Joanne C. Kelleher

One of the things I do in my marketing role is to monitor various keywords used to find our website, track how many times they appear as results in a Google search over time and where our site and this blog fall within the rankings. As I was updating my list, I was surprised to see how much growth there was for phrases related to RFID security. Comparing results from December 2008 to June 2011 shows a two to six fold increase. There are more advertisements for these phrases now too. Here are some examples:

Keyword Phrase

December 2008

June 2011

RFID security

518,000

2,980,000

RFID Authentication

1,340,000

8,190,000

Secure RFID solutions

313,000

682,000

Secure RFID

3,090,000

11,000,000

Secure RFID tag

402,000

11,000,000

I suspect this upsurge reflects a combination of the overall growth in content online and the way Google displays it, plus the increase in interest in the topic of RFID security. Since the end of 2008 we have seen a variety of RFID hacks, the growth in RFID associations, the release of new RFID security technologies and products (ranging from cryptographic solutions to protective wallets), a new focus on the issue by standards development bodies and a proliferation of interest in all cybersecurity issues. All of which have been written about on line.

On a related topic, in February 2009, I wrote a blog for the RFID Security Alliance titled RFID Security & Privacy and Search Engine Results.

As someone who has been involved with this industry for 5 years now, I am glad to see the continued interest in this topic and I’m curious to see how grows in the future.

Thanks for posting this, it was very informative. I’ve been working on multiple RFID security research projects since before this period and I agree, the change in popularity has been notable. The same can be said about NFC as high-profile companies have been working on mobile RF/NFC products.
