Radio Frequency ID Devices in Humans

Contributed by Joanne Kelleher

The American Medical Association recently issued a report called Radio Frequency ID Devices in Humans. Various media outlets have picked up on this report and it is interesting to see that the articles related to it have ranged from positive (Verichip’s press release) to balanced (Computerworld) to negative (policy advocates).

One of the AMA’s major concerns relates to the security and privacy of the patient records, a concern that we share.

[...] In the civilian sector, devices such as cochlear implants, pacemakers, heart monitors and replaceable joints are being implanted.  So, what example does Singer use for voluntary technologic implants, which “don’t merely replace something lost, but add something more”?  Yes, the implantable RFID chip from VeriChip.  I wrote about the American Medical Association’s response to putting RFID tags in humans over two years ago in http://www.securerf.com/RFID-Security-blog/?p=25.   [...]
